An explanation tells the reader why a value applies. An effect tells them what follows. A conclusion answers the question in one line.
This lesson is part of Akhlak and exam response. It follows developing a relevant KBAT answer, so read that first if scenario questions are new to you.
What makes three sentences into one answer?
Linking words. They show the marker how one sentence depends on the last.
Pick the connector that matches the relationship:
| Relationship | Connector | Sentence shape |
|---|---|---|
| Reason | because | Value applies because of a fact |
| Consequence | so, as a result | Action leads to an effect |
| Summary | therefore, this means | Closing answer to the question |
Worked example: kindness to neighbours
Question: Explain the effect of caring for neighbours on community life.
Unlinked answer. “Caring for neighbours is encouraged. Neighbours help each other. The community is peaceful.”
Each sentence is true. Nothing shows why the second follows from the first.
Linked answer.
- Explanation: Caring for neighbours means checking on them and sharing what you can, because neighbours live closest and notice needs first.
- Effect: As a result, a family facing a difficulty, such as an illness, receives help quickly, and trust grows between households.
- Conclusion: Therefore, caring for neighbours makes a community supportive and peaceful.
The linked version adds one reason and one consequence, yet stays at three sentences. Every connector ties a claim to something before it.
The mistake to avoid
The common slip is a conclusion that introduces a new idea. A closing sentence should answer the question using points already made.
| Weak closing | Better closing |
|---|---|
| “Also, people should be generous with money.” | “Therefore, caring for neighbours makes a community supportive.” |
| “Islam is a complete way of life.” | “This means neighbours who help each other build peaceful streets.” |
If the closing line could be removed without losing the answer, rewrite it so it restates the answer to the question.
A three-sentence closing pattern
- State the value or practice in the question’s own words.
- Give one effect that follows from it.
- Finish with “Therefore” and the direct answer.
The pattern suits two-to-four mark questions. For longer questions, repeat the middle step for each point asked.
Check yourself
Question: Explain the effect of keeping promises on friendships. Write an explanation, an effect and a conclusion, linked with connectors.
Answer
A model answer: Keeping promises means doing what you said you would do, because a promise creates an expectation in the other person. As a result, friends feel secure and are willing to share plans and responsibilities with you. Therefore, keeping promises strengthens friendship through trust.
Check that each sentence uses one connector and that the last sentence answers the question without adding a new point.
