Connect a short rhythm to its notation

You can clap the rhythm, yet the bar will not add up when you write it down.

A bar of rhythm is correct when the note values add up to what the time signature asks. Count the beats, write the total, and compare it with the top number.

This lesson is part of the SPM subjects and learning resources section. The rhythms here are original, and they are written in words so they work without a notation screen.

How do I check a bar?

  1. Read the time signature. In 4/4 each bar needs 4 crotchet beats.
  2. Write the beat value under each note.
  3. Add them up.
  4. Compare the total with the bar’s requirement.

Common values in 4/4 are a semibreve (4), a minim (2), a crotchet (1) and a quaver (½). A dot adds half the note’s value, so a dotted crotchet is 1 + ½ = 1½ beats.

Worked example: an original bar

Bar 1 in 4/4 reads: crotchet, quaver, quaver, minim.

Note Beats
Crotchet 1
Quaver ½
Quaver ½
Minim 2
Total 4

The total is 4, so the bar is correct. Clap it while counting “1, 2-and, 3, 4” with the minim held across beats 3 and 4.

Bar 2. Dotted crotchet, quaver, minim: 1½ + ½ + 2 = 4, so this bar is also complete.

The mistake that costs marks

The common slip is to treat a dotted crotchet as one beat, which leaves the bar half a beat short, or to forget the dot and overfill.

Bar (4/4) Wrong count Correct count
Dotted crotchet, quaver, minim 1 + ½ + 2 = 3½ (short) 1½ + ½ + 2 = 4
Crotchet, crotchet, minim, quaver 1 + 1 + 2 + ½ = 4½ (over) Needs one fewer half beat

Fixing an incomplete bar

If a bar is half a beat short, add a quaver or a quaver rest. If it is over, change a long note to a shorter one. Then recount.

Check yourself

A 3/4 bar contains a minim and a crotchet rest. Is it complete? Then a second 3/4 bar contains a crotchet and a minim; state what you would add or remove, if anything.

Answer

3/4 needs 3 beats. Bar 1: minim 2 + crotchet rest 1 = 3, so it is complete.

Bar 2: crotchet 1 + minim 2 = 3, so it is also complete and nothing needs changing.

If it had held a crotchet and a dotted minim, the total would have been 1 + 3 = 4, one beat too many.

What to study next

Good rhythm practice needs a routine, so continue with build a focused rehearsal log. Then try the Music original practice set.

The structured answer self-review can check whether each bar shows its beat total. A teacher can work through your own bars in online one-to-one Music tuition.

Common questions

How do I know how many beats a bar needs?

Read the top number of the time signature. In 4/4 the top number 4 means four beats in each bar, and the bottom number 4 means each beat is a crotchet. So a 4/4 bar adds up to four crotchet beats.

What are the beat values of common notes?

In 4/4, a semibreve is 4 beats, a minim 2, a crotchet 1, a quaver one half and a semiquaver one quarter. A dot after a note adds half of that note's value.

Can I check my rhythm without an instrument?

Yes. Add up the beat values in each bar on paper, then clap the bar while counting aloud. If the total is wrong, the notation is wrong, whatever it sounds like.

Is this page about playing or about notation?

It is about reading and writing rhythm notation. Performance and listening assessments are arranged by your school.

If clapping a rhythm is easy but writing it down is not, a one-to-one teacher can work through your own bars and show the counting habit that makes notation add up.
