Form 5 Mathematics extends Form 4 algebra into variation, matrices, transformations, trigonometry and data. This page lists the chapters in a study order and shows how they connect.
It belongs to SPM Mathematics. Skills from the Form 4 route carry straight into these chapters.
What are the Form 5 topics?
The algebra group is variation and matrices.
The geometry group is congruency, enlargement and combined transformations and trigonometric ratios and graphs.
The data and money group is dispersion of grouped data, insurance mathematics and taxation mathematics.
Schools may teach the chapters in a different order, so follow your class sequence for school work.
How do the topics connect?
Here is an illustrative example. The value z varies directly with x and inversely with y. When x = 4 and y = 2, z = 6. Find z when x = 9 and y = 6.
Write z = kx ÷ y. Substitute: 6 = k × 4 ÷ 2, so k = 3. Then z = 3 × 9 ÷ 6 = 4.5.
The steps are the same ones used in matrices and transformations: set up a rule, find the unknown, then substitute into the new case.
Where should you start?
- Finishing Form 5 with gaps: find the earliest Form 4 topic where your working goes wrong, repair it, then return to the current chapter.
- On track and wanting practice: work through each chapter’s practice page, then mix topics.
- Tidying up how you write answers: read the SPM Mathematics answering guide and practise the command words.
The algebra step repair trainer helps when rearranging and substituting still cause slips.
When is tuition worth considering?
Free lessons show the method. A one-to-one teacher watches you meet a question you have not seen, and shows how to begin it.
