SPM Geography revision route and checklist

You have a pile of Geography notes and no order to revise them in.

This page gives you a revision order for SPM Geography and a checklist you can tick off. Use it with your own textbook, since topic labels can differ between schools.

It supports the main SPM Geography guide. Check the current assessment format on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website, then read the assessment and answering guide.

What are the four passes?

Work in this order so that each pass reuses the one before.

  1. Skills pass. Scale, grid references, contours, graphs and map comparison, from map and graph skills.
  2. Physical pass. Landforms and processes, from physical geography.
  3. Human and environment pass. Population and settlements, economic activities and resources and environmental management.
  4. Mixed pass. Timed questions that combine a map, a table and a written explanation.

What does the checklist look like?

Tick a line only when you can do it from memory, without notes.

Skill line Test yourself by Ticked
Measure distance with a scale Convert 4.6 cm on a 1:50 000 map
Read contours and slope Say which side is steeper, with a reason
Choose a graph for data Justify a line or bar graph in one sentence
Calculate population density Divide people by the matched area, write the unit
Split population change Work natural increase and net migration separately
Classify a settlement function Give two clues for one function
Explain, not list Write a linked sentence for each supplied factor
Compare responses State a benefit and a cost for each

Add your own lines from your school’s topic list. A line you keep failing goes to the top of the next session.

How do you fit it into a week?

A sample week for a student with five evenings free:

  • Two evenings: one skills or topic pass each, with a 10-minute recall at the start.
  • Two evenings: two original questions per topic, then mark and log each slip.
  • One evening: a mixed timed set from the practice sets.

The realistic revision planner builds a plan from your own dates, and the spaced recall planner schedules repeat recall of the lines you fail. Terms you forget belong in the glossary.

When is a teacher useful?

A teacher helps most when the checklist shows the same skill failing after two passes. A one-to-one lesson can then work from your own marked answers.

Common questions

Where should Geography revision start?

Start with map and graph skills, since most topics use them. Then revise the physical topics in order, then population, settlements, economic and environmental topics, and finish with mixed practice.

How long should each pass take?

Set the pass lengths to the days you have. One topic per session is enough: read, recall from memory, then answer two original questions. Adjust to your school calendar.

Should I memorise case examples?

Learn only the examples your teacher or textbook uses, and learn what each shows. An example you cannot explain earns less than a supplied source read well.

How do I check the current syllabus?

Confirm the current subject specification and assessment format on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website, and use your school's scheme of work for topic order.

If you cannot tell which Geography topic to revise first, one-to-one lessons can begin with a short check of your answers and set the order with you.
