Where to start with SPM Science

Physics, Chemistry and Biology all need calculation, graphs and clear written explanations.

Physics, Chemistry and Biology look different on the page but ask similar things of you: read a situation, use the right quantity and unit, and explain the result in a full sentence.

This page shows what the sciences share, where each one differs and who should start where. The Physics, Chemistry and Biology pages hold the chapter lessons.

What do the science subjects share?

Four skills recur across all three:

  • Units and conversion: kg, g, cm³, dm³, mol.
  • Reading graphs: gradients, trends, intercepts.
  • Variables: what is changed, measured and kept the same.
  • Explaining: cause, effect and link, in a complete sentence.

If you are weak in any of these, every science feels harder than it is.

One slip across two subjects

Here is an illustrative example. In Physics, a student converts 250 g to kg and writes 250 000 kg, then uses it in F = ma.

In Chemistry, the same student finds moles from 250 cm³ at 0.2 mol/dm³ and writes 250 × 0.2 = 50 mol. The correct working is 250 ÷ 1 000 = 0.25 dm³, then 0.25 × 0.2 = 0.05 mol.

Both losses come from the same unit conversion. The units and significant figure checker drills this directly.

How the subjects differ

Subject Main test Typical loss
Physics Choosing and rearranging formulas, reading graphs Missing the second step
Chemistry Mole calculations, equations, reasoning about reactions Wrong unit or unbalanced equation
Biology Terms, processes and data interpretation Missing the reason in an explanation
Science A mix of all three at a lighter level Weak foundations across topics

Who should start where?

  • Calculation loses marks: repair algebra and units first, then return to the chapter.
  • Explanations lose marks: practise the claim, reason, link pattern on short questions.
  • New to Form 4 sciences: read the first chapter of each subject and try one exercise before the school test.

The motion graph explorer is one free tool to begin with.

Free learning and one-to-one lessons

The subject pages are free to read. Physics tuition, Chemistry tuition and Biology tuition offer an experienced teacher for one subject, beginning with a one-hour trial class (from RM50).

Common questions

Which science subject should I study first?

Start with the one with the nearest test or the largest gap. If you are weak in calculation, repair Mathematics skills first because they support Physics and Chemistry.

Why do I lose marks in Biology when it has less calculation?

Biology tests precise terms and explanations. Marks are lost when the reason or the link between ideas is missing, so practise writing complete short answers.

Do science subjects share skills?

Yes. Units, reading graphs, rearranging formulas, identifying variables and explaining a result appear across Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

What about practical work?

Practical work assessed in school is done at school. A teacher can help you plan, describe and interpret experiments in written questions.

When a science subject stalls on calculation or on written explanation, a one-to-one teacher can work on the exact step that loses marks. Tell us the subject, the form and the chapter.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
