Individual long turn practice

Individual long turn: practice with model answers

You have read the speaking lessons and want prompts to practise out loud.

These eight tasks go from planning to a full timed turn. Prepare keyword notes, speak aloud, then compare with the model answer.

The lessons are in individual long turn. Use the timed original practice session builder to set your own timer.

Tasks 1 to 4: building the parts

Task 1. Prompt: “Talk about your favourite place at home. You may say where it is, what you do there and why you like it.” Write keyword notes only.

Answer

Notes: open: balcony / where: behind the kitchen / do: read, plants / why: quiet, breeze / close: my calm corner.

Each prompt has one keyword, and there is one word each for the opening and the closing.

Task 2. Expand “I enjoy cooking” using reason, example and result.

Answer

“I enjoy cooking because I like making something for others. For example, last Sunday I made curry puffs for my neighbours. So they smiled and I felt proud.”

Task 3. A speaker says: “I like cycling. It is good. I do it a lot.” Rewrite the last two sentences with a specific detail.

Answer

“It keeps me fit, and every Saturday I ride with my brother to the lake and back, which is about six kilometres.”

Task 4. Give a closing line for a turn about a school trip.

Answer

“So the trip was tiring, but it taught me to work with my classmates, and I would gladly go again.”

Tasks 5 to 8: time, flow and review

Task 5. You have 45 seconds to speak. Plan a split for an opening, two points and a closing.

Answer

Opening 5 seconds, point one 17 seconds, point two 17 seconds, closing 6 seconds. The total is 45 seconds.

Task 6. You lose your place mid-answer. Name two things you can say or do.

Answer

Pause for two seconds and look at the next keyword. Say a bridge such as “Another thing I remember is” and continue with that keyword.

Task 7. Review this invented transcript with one observation and one change.

“I went to Melaka. It was fun. We ate satay. Then we went home.”

Answer

Observation: the answer lists events but gives no reason or example for why the trip was fun.

Change: add a detail, such as “It was fun because we rode a trishaw along the river and my sister laughed the whole way.”

Task 8. Full turn. Prompt: “Talk about a skill you would like to learn. You may say what it is, why you want to learn it and how you would practise.” Speak for about one minute, then compare with the model.

Answer

A model: “The skill I would like to learn is swimming. I want to learn it because my family often visits the beach, and I feel nervous when my cousins swim far out. For example, last holiday I stayed on the sand while they swam. I would practise twice a week at the public pool with my uncle, who is a good swimmer.

So learning to swim would make me safer and more confident.”

Check for these parts: opening, each prompt, an example and a closing.

If you got these wrong

Find the lesson for each task you missed and retry only those tasks.

Use the mistake log and paper-error review to record repeated patterns. If you would like a teacher to listen with you, see online one-to-one English tuition.

Common questions

How should I use these tasks?

Read the task, prepare keyword notes, then speak aloud and record yourself if you can. Only then open the model answer. Compare the structure, not the exact words, because there is more than one good answer.

Are the prompts from past papers?

No. All prompts and model answers are original, written for practice. They practise the skills in this chapter and do not predict any assessment content. Confirm the real format with your teacher.

Should I memorise the model answers?

No. A memorised answer will not fit a new prompt. Use the models to see how structure and detail work, then speak your own answer on a different prompt.

If your full attempts still feel scattered, one-to-one English lessons let a teacher listen to a whole turn and point to the parts that need work.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
