Improve an English essay without AI rewriting it

You are tempted to paste your essay into a tool and accept whatever comes back.

An essay rewritten for you improves the page but not your writing. Practice is meant to make you better at writing your own sentences, so the useful feedback points at a problem and leaves the fix to you.

This page shows how to improve an essay and keep it yours. It also says when one-to-one English tuition may help.

Why is the temptation so strong?

You have a draft that feels weak, and a tool can return something smooth in seconds. The result looks better, which feels like progress.

The trouble is that the next time you write, you are alone again. The skill you needed, choosing and ordering your own words, has not improved.

What is the difference between feedback and rewriting?

Feedback tells you what to fix: “This paragraph has no example” or “The second sentence does not match the topic.” Rewriting hands you the fixed paragraph.

Only feedback builds skill. You have to find the example and write the sentence yourself, and that effort is the practice.

Follow your school’s rules on which tools you may use for schoolwork. For your own practice, use feedback to find problems and rewrite them yourself.

A worked example: three small steps

A student writes: “Recycling is good. It helps the earth. We should recycle more.”

Step 1: find the gap. The paragraph makes a claim and repeats it. It has no example and no reason.

Step 2: add your own example. The student thinks of something true from school: “In our school, plastic bottles are thrown into the normal bin every recess.”

Step 3: connect it. “Recycling is important because waste does not simply disappear. In our school, plastic bottles go into the normal bin every recess, so the rubbish collects. If students used a separate bin, most of those bottles could be recycled.”

Every word is the student’s, and the paragraph is much stronger. The student has also learned that a claim needs an example, which helps in the next essay.

A test for any change

Before you accept a change, ask whether you could have written it yourself after thinking a little longer. If yes, write it in your own words and use the suggestion as a hint. If no, find out why the change works before you use it.

A sentence you could not explain is unlikely to appear in your exam writing.

What a revision routine looks like

  1. Write the essay yourself, with no outside help.
  2. Check it against the task: every point answered, audience and purpose clear.
  3. Read it aloud, and mark any sentence where you stumble.
  4. Rewrite only the marked parts in your own words.
  5. Note what you changed and why in your mistake log.

The log matters. After a few essays you will see the same two or three patterns, and those are what to work on next.

When might one-to-one tuition help?

If you cannot see what is wrong with your draft, or you fix one thing and another breaks, feedback from a teacher can help. The aim is to learn what to look for, not to hand over the work.

In an online one-to-one lesson, the teacher reads your essay with you, explains each comment, and asks you to revise in your own words. The essay stays yours, and you leave knowing how to improve the next one.

You can try this with the one-hour trial class (from RM50), a real lesson. The fee is agreed before the trial, and afterwards you decide whether the teacher is a good fit. Your schoolwork should stay your own work.

Common questions

Is it wrong to use AI to help with my essay?

Your school decides what is allowed for schoolwork, so follow its rules. For your own practice, a rewritten essay teaches you little, because the improvement happens on the page and not in your skill.

Will a rewritten essay help me in the exam?

You will write the exam answer yourself, without a tool. Practice that builds your own sentences transfers to the exam, while a polished copy of someone else's sentences does not.

How can I get feedback without losing my voice?

Ask for comments on what is unclear or missing, not for a new version. Then rewrite the parts yourself. You keep your words, and you learn from each correction.

What if I have nobody to give me feedback?

Use a checklist and read your essay aloud. Check that every part of the task is answered, then check the order, then the language. A teacher can add a second opinion when you need one.

If you want feedback that teaches you to improve the next essay yourself, one-to-one English lessons let a teacher revise beside you and explain each change.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
