Form 4 English builds the habits that longer tasks need later. This page gives a study order and shows how one task uses four skills at once.
Schools teach topics in their own order, so follow your teacher’s scheme of work. Use this route to see how the skills support each other. Next year’s work is in the Form 5 route.
What is the study order?
- Reading short texts: purpose, paraphrase and evidence.
- Short communicative messages: emails, notes and replies.
- Grammar repair: tenses, agreement and sentence building.
- Guided writing: turning points into paragraphs.
- Listening skills and speaking interview: understanding and answering aloud.
Example: one email task, four skills
This is an original task: reply to a friend who asks about the school canteen.
You read the friend’s message to see what it asks (reading). You choose a greeting and a friendly ending (messages). You keep the tenses right: “I ate there yesterday” and “I will eat there again” (grammar). You turn three points into three short paragraphs (guided writing).
The same skills help when you answer the same question aloud.
Who should start where?
If you understand the passage but lose marks on your answers, start with reading. If your ideas are good but your sentences contain errors, begin with grammar. If you freeze when speaking, start with the speaking interview lessons.
To check your written work, use the English writing task checklist. For a teacher to start with you, see online one-to-one English tuition.
