Questions
1. An object is 90 mm wide, 60 mm high and 45 mm deep. At 1:1 with a 25 mm gap, how much horizontal space do the front and side views need together?
Answer
Width of front view 90 + gap 25 + depth of side view 45 = 160 mm.
2. The same object must fit a usable width of 150 mm. Which of 1:1 and 1:2 works, and what is the horizontal need at that scale?
Answer
1:1 needs 160 mm, which exceeds 150. At 1:2 the drawn sizes are 45 and 22.5, so the need is 45 + 25 + 22.5 = 92.5 mm, which fits.
3. At 1:2, a dimension line measures 35 mm on the sheet. What figure is written on it?
Answer
- Dimension figures always show the real size: 35 × 2 = 70.
4. A real length of 56 mm is drawn at 1:4. How long is the drawn line?
Answer
56 ÷ 4 = 14 mm.
5. A front view shows a step at x = 30, and the top view shows it at x = 35. State the error and its size.
Answer
An alignment error across views, 5 mm. One view must be corrected to match the stated dimension.
6. A block is 60 wide, 35 high and 40 deep. Give the drawn receding edge length in cabinet oblique, and the drawn front face.
Answer
The front face is true shape: 60 × 35. The receding edge is 40 ÷ 2 = 20 mm, at 45°.
7. In a cabinet oblique drawing, a receding edge is drawn 16 mm. What is the real depth? What would it be in cavalier?
Answer
Cabinet: 16 × 2 = 32 mm. Cavalier: 16 mm.
8. A front view is at 1:5, and a hole shows as two dashed vertical lines 6 mm apart on the sheet. What is the real hole diameter, and why are the lines dashed?
Answer
Real diameter = 6 × 5 = 30 mm. The lines are dashed because the hole is inside the object, hidden by the front face.
If you got these wrong
- Questions 1 and 2: reread planning a multi-view drawing from dimensions.
- Questions 3 and 4: reread reviewing scale, projection and labelling mistakes.
- Question 5: reread checking alignment and dimensions across views.
- Questions 6 and 7: reread oblique drawings and true lengths.
- Question 8: reread visible and hidden features.
