SPM Economics terms and question words

You keep meeting Economics terms in two languages and mixing up the ones that sound alike.

This glossary lists SPM Economics terms with their Bahasa Melayu equivalents, one example each, and the term it is most easily confused with. Use it with the SPM Economics learning guide when a word in a question or a diagram label is not clear.

Terms follow the wording used in Malaysian textbooks. Confirm the exact wording your paper uses with your teacher.

Common questions

Which language should I learn the terms in?

Learn them in the language your paper and your school teach in, and keep the other as a second column. Check with your teacher which language your exam answers may use, because this page cannot confirm the rules.

Why are some terms listed as confused with another?

Pairs like movement and shift, or nominal and real, sound alike and change the answer. Seeing them side by side with an example stops you writing one when the question asks for the other.

Do I need to memorise every term in this list?

Start with the ten you use most in diagrams and calculations: demand, supply, equilibrium, ceteris paribus, elasticity, nominal, real, exchange rate, tariff and opportunity cost. Add others as they appear in your topics.

Where can I practise using these words?

Use them in full sentences in the practice sets. A term you can put in a correct sentence with an example is one you understand, not one you only recognise.

If a term keeps slipping in a timed answer, one-to-one Economics lessons let a teacher test you on the pairs you actually confuse, in the language you write in.
