Chinese composition with no clear point

Your composition has plenty of good phrases, yet a reader cannot tell what it is trying to say.

A composition can be written in polished Chinese and still lose marks if it has no clear point. Each sentence works, but the whole piece does not say anything in particular.

This page shows how to find the missing point and rebuild around it. It sits with the composition routes in SPM Bahasa Cina, including narrative and argumentative writing.

What does this feel like?

You may hear or think this.

  • “My teacher wrote 主题不明确 beside my essay.”
  • “I used good words, but I cannot say what my essay is about.”
  • “I kept writing because the page was not full.”

The last thought reveals the cause. Without a point, length replaces direction.

What usually causes it?

Writing starts from a topic instead of a point. A topic is an area such as 友情. A point is a claim within that area, such as 真正的友情是在对方困难时出现。

Without a point, each paragraph adds more about the topic, and no paragraph builds on the previous one. Phrases then fill the gaps because the writer has nothing more specific to say.

The one-sentence point test

Before writing, finish this sentence: 我想让读者明白…

If you cannot finish it in one sentence, you do not have a point yet. If your sentence is a topic word, such as 友情 or 努力, push further until it becomes a claim.

A worked revision

Original task: 写一篇以《一次难忘的经历》为题的文章。

Draft paragraph: 那是一个难忘的下午,阳光灿烂,我和同学们兴高采烈地去了公园。大家有说有笑,玩得十分开心,时间过得飞快,我永远不会忘记这美好的时光。

The paragraph has phrases, but no point. We do not know why it was memorable.

Step 1, write the point: 我想让读者明白,失败之后有人陪伴,比成功更让人难忘。

Step 2, choose the event that proves it: 校运会接力赛,我掉了接力棒,队友没有责备我。

Revised paragraph: 接力棒从我手中滑落的时候,全场一片安静。我不敢抬头,只听见阿伟蹲下来,对我说:“没关系,捡起来,我们还有最后一百米。”

The revised paragraph shows the event, and the quote carries the point without naming it.

Check each paragraph against the point

After drafting, ask what each paragraph adds.

Question If the answer is no
Does it connect to the point sentence? Cut or refocus it
Does it give a new detail, not a repeat? Merge with the previous paragraph
Would the reader miss it if removed? It is decoration

If two paragraphs answer the same question, combine them. If one adds nothing, replace it with a detail that supports the point.

Where to practise

The composition structure planner helps you write the point first. The lesson on planning conflict, development and resolution covers narrative, and writing a clear position covers argument.

Use the mistake log and paper-error review to record every 主题不明确 comment and see whether the pattern repeats.

When might one-to-one tuition be worth considering?

It is hard to judge your own point because you already know what you meant. A teacher reading only the page can tell you what the composition actually says.

In one-to-one lessons the teacher reads your Chinese, states the point they find, and compares it with your intention. See online one-to-one Chinese tuition if you want that outside reader.

Common questions

What is the point of a composition?

It is the one idea the reader should leave with. In a narrative it is what changed or was learnt. In an argument it is your position. You should be able to state it in one sentence before you start writing.

Can a composition have a point but still feel unfocused?

Yes, if paragraphs drift away from it. Test each paragraph by asking what it adds to the point. A paragraph that adds nothing can be cut or refocused.

Do I need to state the point directly?

It depends on the text type. Argumentative writing states a position clearly. Narrative can show the point through events and let the ending suggest it. In both cases, you must know the point yourself.

How long should planning take in an exam?

A short plan is worth the time. Spend enough minutes to write the point sentence, the paragraph order and one detail for each paragraph. Check your teacher's advice for timing, since paper lengths differ.

If your compositions read well sentence by sentence but lose direction overall, a one-to-one teacher can read them in Chinese and help you find the point before you write.
