Fluent speech and strong written answers are separate skills. If you chat easily in Chinese at home but lose marks on paper, this page explains why and what to change.
It connects to the language work in SPM Bahasa Cina and to the exercises under language accuracy and expression.
What does this feel like?
These may sound familiar.
- “I understand everything my relatives say, but my essays feel childish.”
- “I can explain it aloud, but when I write I lose the words.”
- “My teacher says my answer is correct but too casual.”
Each one describes a gap between spoken Chinese and the written standard the exam expects.
Why does speech not transfer to writing?
Speech is supported by the listener. A pause, a tone or a gesture fills gaps, and a friend can ask you to repeat yourself.
Writing has no such help. The reader has only the page, so sentences must be complete, words must be exact, and the order of ideas must carry the meaning. In many Malaysian homes, spoken Chinese also mixes in dialect or Malay and English words that the written form replaces.
One question, two answers
Question: 为什么作者认为保护环境很重要?
Spoken-style answer: 因为如果不保护的话,以后就没有好的环境了啦,所以大家都要注意。
The sentence is easy to say, but it repeats 保护, uses the filler 啦 and never states what goes wrong.
Written-style answer: 作者认为,如果人们不保护环境,空气和水源会遭到污染,后代将失去健康的生活空间,所以保护环境关系到每个人的未来。
The rewrite names the consequence, uses 遭到 and 关系到 in place of speech-like phrases, and closes with a clear point.
Spoken habits that cost marks
| Spoken habit | Example | Written replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Sentence-final particles | 很重要啦 | 很重要 |
| Vague words | 那个东西 | Name the object |
| Repeated connectors | 然后…然后… | 接着, 随后, 最后 |
| Dialect or mixed words | Malay or English words in the sentence | The Chinese equivalent |
| Incomplete sentences | 因为没时间。 | 因为时间不够,所以他没有完成作业。 |
Keep this table near your notes. After you write a paragraph, check it for each habit.
A practical routine
- Say it, then write it. Answer a question aloud, record the main idea, then write it in complete sentences.
- Collect written phrases. Note three phrases from each reading passage that you would never say aloud.
- Use them once. Put each phrase in a sentence about your own life within a day.
- Check against the glossary. The terminology glossary lists question words so you know what shape of answer to write.
For reading questions, answering concise questions without copying irrelevant sentences shows how to build precise written answers from the passage.
When might one-to-one tuition help?
Speakers often find it hard to see their own spoken habits, because the sentences sound natural to them. A teacher can read your Chinese as written and mark the places where speech leaks in.
Lessons explain the method in English or BM, whichever suits you, while your written work stays in Chinese. See online one-to-one Chinese tuition for what to mention when you start.
