This section trains one habit: answer from the evidence in the question. The same three-part structure works for energy, rate, materials and conditions.
It sits inside SPM Chemistry thermochemistry, and it is most useful once the four core lessons are secure.
What is the routine?
Write three parts in order. Each part is one sentence.
- Claim: your choice or conclusion.
- Evidence: the specific value or observation from the question that supports it.
- Reason: the chemistry idea that links the evidence to the claim.
What does it look like in practice?
A worked example. A question gives two energy profiles, X and Y, for the same reaction. Profile Y has a lower peak, and the reactants and products are at the same levels in both.
A recalled-fact answer says “catalysts speed up reactions”. The evidence-based answer says: “Y has the lower activation energy (claim: Y is the catalysed pathway). Its peak is lower while the products are at the same level as in X (evidence). A catalyst lowers the activation energy and leaves ΔH unchanged (reason).”
The second answer uses only what the diagram shows and so earns the marks for evidence and reason.
Which lessons apply the routine?
- Interpreting an energy-profile change without confusing activation energy and enthalpy
- Distinguishing a faster reaction from a larger equilibrium yield
- Explaining a material choice from its supplied structure and properties
- Comparing process conditions using classroom evidence
Who should start where?
If energy diagrams still cause slips, begin with the first lesson. If graphs and yields blur together, begin with the second. If structure and properties questions stall, begin with the third. Practise the chapter with the thermochemistry practice set.

Need help practising the routine?
A teacher can give you unseen data and listen to your claim, evidence and reason until the structure becomes automatic. If you would like that, see online one-to-one Chemistry tuition.
