SPM Chemistry terms and question words

You keep meeting terms in Chemistry questions and are not sure exactly what each one means.

This glossary lists SPM Chemistry terms with their Bahasa Melayu equivalents, an example in context and the term each is most easily confused with. For more help switching between languages, use the BM-English terminology bridge with Chinese explanations.

Which words appear in questions?

Term (Bahasa Melayu) Meaning Example Confused with
Observation (pemerhatian) What you see or measure Gas bubbles form Inference
Inference (inferens) A conclusion from an observation The gas is carbon dioxide Observation
Variable (pemboleh ubah) A factor that can change Temperature Constant
Explain (terangkan) Give a reason using chemistry ideas Because particles collide more Describe

Use these terms in full sentences in your answers. If wording is your main problem, read the SPM Chemistry exam guide. The SPM Chemistry learning guide links each term to its topic.

Common questions

Are the Malay terms the ones used in SPM papers?

The Malay terms listed follow common Malaysian textbook usage. Papers may appear in English or Malay depending on the candidate, so learn both and check your textbook for the exact wording your school uses.

Should I memorise every term?

Learn the ones you meet in your current topic first. Write each in a sentence with an example, since understanding a term in use helps more than memorising a definition alone.

How is 'observation' different from 'inference'?

An observation is what you see, hear, smell or measure. An inference is what you conclude from it. For example, a colourless gas that relights a glowing splint is the observation, and the gas being oxygen is the inference.

If you know the ideas but the wording of questions trips you up, a one-to-one Chemistry teacher can go through terms with you in the language that helps, then practise them in answers.
