Vision, mission and objectives

You mix up vision and mission, and your objectives read like wishes instead of targets.

A vision says where a business wants to go, a mission says what it does now, and objectives are the measurable steps between them. This cluster teaches you to tell them apart, write objectives with numbers, check progress and explain when they change.

It sits within SPM Business, and the four lessons below feed into business plans later in the syllabus.

How do the parts connect?

Think of a road trip. The vision is the destination, the mission is why and how you travel, and objectives are the checkpoints along the way.

Step Question to ask Lesson
1 Is this sentence a vision, a mission or an objective? Distinguishing vision, mission and objectives
2 Does the objective have a number and a deadline? Writing measurable objectives
3 What will we measure to know if we are on track? Connecting objectives to performance measures
4 What in the case would make us change the target? Explaining why objectives may change

One short example to see the difference

Take an invented bakery, Roti Pagi. Its vision is “to be the favourite neighbourhood bakery in Taman Seri”. Its mission is “to bake fresh bread every morning for families who live nearby”.

Its objective is “to raise monthly sales from RM6 000 to RM7 200 within six months”. The increase is RM1 200, which is 20% of RM6 000.

Only the objective can be checked on a calendar. A student who writes “to be the best bakery” as an objective has written a vision, because nothing in it can be measured.

Who should start where?

  • Sentences that sound alike: begin with the distinguishing lesson.
  • Objectives marked “not measurable”: begin with writing measurable objectives.
  • Not sure what to track: begin with performance measures, after the objectives lesson.
  • Case questions asking “why might the objective change”: begin with the last lesson.

When you have worked through them, test all four on the cluster practice set. The business case-answer planner gives you a frame for case responses.

Common questions

What is the difference between vision, mission and objectives?

A vision describes where the business wants to be in the future. A mission describes what it does, for whom and how, today. Objectives are specific targets, with numbers and time, that move the business toward the vision.

Do all businesses have a written vision and mission?

Not all do, and a small stall may only have an owner's plan in mind. In SPM cases, treat them as a way to describe the business's direction, and use whatever the case states.

Where should I start if I lose marks on this topic?

Start with telling the three terms apart, since the other lessons depend on it. Then practise writing measurable objectives, because that skill also helps with performance measures and with explaining change.

Can objectives change?

Yes. Objectives are reviewed when the market, costs or the business's own results change. The last lesson in this cluster shows how to explain a change using case evidence.

If these three terms still blur in your answers, one-to-one Business lessons let a teacher ask you to sort real case sentences aloud and correct the exact point where they merge.
