SPM Business assessment and answering guide

You know the definitions, but case questions ask for more than the definition.

This page explains how to read and answer Business questions. It does not state the paper structure, marks or topics tested, because those belong to the official documents from Lembaga Peperiksaan (lp.moe.gov.my) and Bahagian Pembangunan Kurikulum (bpk.moe.gov.my).

Check the current format there before you plan your revision. The habits below help whatever the format is.

How do you read what a question wants?

Start with the command word, because it sets how much you write and how you use the case.

Command What it usually asks for
State, list A short answer with no explanation
Define A clear meaning in one or two sentences
Explain A point, a reason, and a link to the case
Justify, recommend A choice, reasons, and why the alternative is weaker
Calculate The formula, the figures substituted, and the answer with units

Read the whole case before you write anything. Look for facts that can serve as evidence, such as a number, a place or a problem.

How is the case used in an answer?

Use the case as the source of your evidence. Name the fact, then say what it means for the question.

Here is an original fictional case. Rina runs a weekend stall selling sambal in jars, and her first Saturday sold 12 of 50 jars because buyers found the jars too large.

Question: explain one reason why Rina’s sales were low. A generic answer says: “Sales were low because the product did not meet customer needs.” An applied answer says: “Sales were low because the 350 ml jars were too large for buyers who live alone, so they did not buy. This shows the product did not meet their needs.”

The second answer names the fact and its effect. The first could be written about any business.

What habits protect marks?

  1. Read the whole case before you write.
  2. Underline the facts you will use.
  3. Write a point, a reason and a link to the case for every explain question.
  4. For calculations, write the formula and the units.
  5. Leave a few minutes to check that each answer answers its own question.

The entrepreneurship section and financial statements section both use case-style questions.

How should you practise?

Write full answers to fictional cases under time, then mark your own answer against the facts in the case. The timed practice session builder sets this up, and the revision plan shows which topics to cover first.

If you want a teacher to mark a full answer with you, see online one-to-one Business tuition.

Common questions

Where do I find the current exam format?

Check the Lembaga Peperiksaan (LP) website at lp.moe.gov.my, or the Bahagian Pembangunan Kurikulum (BPK) site at bpk.moe.gov.my. Formats and documents can change, so confirm the details for your own year there.

How much of my answer should use the case?

Wherever a question gives a case, tie each point to a fact in it. A point that could be written about any business earns less than one that names the situation in the case.

Should I memorise definitions?

Learn definitions so you can use them accurately, then practise applying them. A correct definition with no link to the case is usually only part of the answer.

What if I am unsure of a term in the case?

Use the facts given and explain your reasoning in plain words. A clear explanation of the situation is better than a wrongly used term.

If you know the content but your answers stay general, a one-to-one Business lesson lets a teacher mark a full answer of yours against the case and show which facts were missing.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
