SPM Biology revision route and checklist

You have a long list of Biology chapters and no clear order to revise them in.

This page gives you a route through SPM Biology revision: a checklist of can-do statements and a four-stage loop to use on every chapter. It is a revision aid, not the official syllabus.

For the syllabus and paper details, check the Lembaga Peperiksaan website (lp.moe.gov.my) and the BPK website (bpk.moe.gov.my). Return to the SPM Biology guide for all chapters.

What is the four-stage loop?

Use the same loop on every chapter, so that revision becomes a habit.

  1. Recall: write what you remember from a blank page, then check it.
  2. Practise: answer original questions on the chapter in full sentences.
  3. Explain: compare your written explanations with a model and fix the wording.
  4. Repeat: return to the gaps after two or three days.

Chapter checklist

Tick each statement only when you can do it from a blank page.

Chapter Can-do statements
Cells and organisation Link organelles and specialised cells to their functions
Movement across membranes Compare diffusion, osmosis and active transport
Metabolism and enzymes Explain enzyme action and read rate graphs
Cell division Sequence mitosis and meiosis and explain variation
Cellular respiration Write the equations and separate respiration from breathing
Leaves and photosynthesis Relate leaf structure to photosynthesis and read limiting-factor graphs
Plant organisation and growth Link tissues to function and compare primary and secondary growth
Plant responses Classify responses and explain bending using auxin
Support and movement Explain antagonistic muscle action and compare support systems
Reproduction, development and growth Compare gametogenesis and read hormone and growth graphs

How should you set the order?

Count the boxes you could not tick in each chapter. Revise the chapters with the most gaps first, but place the cell chapters early, since enzymes and respiration depend on them.

Finish each chapter with its practice set, for example the plant responses practice set or the cellular respiration practice set.

Which tools help you schedule it?

When might a teacher help?

If the same statements stay unticked after two rounds, the gap may be a skill underneath the chapter, such as explaining a process in cause-and-effect order. A teacher can find it quickly and work on it with you. See online one-to-one Biology tuition.

Common questions

In what order should I revise the chapters?

Start with the chapters where you tick the fewest boxes, because they give the largest gain for the time spent. Revise cells, membranes and enzymes early, since later chapters such as respiration use them. Leave strong chapters for a final light pass.

How do I use the checklist?

Copy it, then tick a can-do statement only when you can do it from a blank page, not when you recognise it in the notes. Untick anything you cannot repeat a few days later.

Does this list show the exam chapters and weightings?

No. It is a revision aid built from the chapter guides on this site. For the current syllabus and paper details, check the Lembaga Peperiksaan website (lp.moe.gov.my) and the BPK website (bpk.moe.gov.my).

Should I memorise the notes or practise questions?

Do both in a loop. Recall the content from memory, then answer questions that use it, so that the terms become explanations you can write.

If your checklist shows the same gaps after a full round, one-to-one Biology lessons let a teacher work on those specific gaps with you instead of rereading everything.
