Speaking individually practice

Individual speaking practice with explained answers

You have read the speaking lessons and want prompts to say aloud before the real thing.

Seven prompts to say aloud, from the individual speaking section. Plan for under a minute, speak, then open the model approach.

Prompts 1 to 3: plan a main point

1. “Adakah anda bersetuju dengan sekolah yang tamat sehingga petang?” Write your three-slot plan.

Answer

One model plan. Main point: tidak setuju. Support 1: murid letih, sukar fokus.

Support 2: masa untuk keluarga berkurang. Closing: waktu sekolah perlu seimbang.

A plan that agrees is equally good if it has one main point, two supports and a closing line.

2. “Ceritakan seorang individu yang anda kagumi.” State your main point in one sentence.

Answer

For example: “Saya mengagumi nenek saya kerana dia tidak pernah berputus asa.” The sentence names the person and the quality in one line, so the listener knows what to expect.

3. What is wrong with the plan “sukan, sihat, kawan, sekolah, penat, pertandingan”?

Answer

It is a list of topics without a main point. Choose what you want to say about sukan, for example “sukan memberi kesihatan”, then select two supports from the words and drop the rest.

Prompts 4 to 5: expand

4. Expand: “Saya suka membantu di rumah.” Add a reason and an example.

Answer

Possible answer: “Saya suka membantu di rumah kerana saya dapat meringankan beban ibu. Contohnya, setiap petang saya menyapu halaman sebelum ibu pulang.” The first sentence gives the reason and the second gives the example.

5. Is this an expansion? “Saya suka membantu di rumah. Membantu di rumah menyeronokkan.”

Answer

No. The second sentence restates the first and gives no reason, example or result. See the lesson on expanding a spoken answer.

Prompts 6 to 7: recover and pace

6. You want to say “pencemaran” and the word escapes you. Give a recovery.

Answer

Describe it: “keadaan apabila air atau udara menjadi kotor.” Or use a simpler word such as “kotor” in the sentence. Both keep you in Bahasa Melayu, and the sentence carries on.

7. After listening to your recording, you hear that every sentence runs into the next. What is your next round?

Answer

Work on pace and pauses. Mark a slash at the end of each sentence on your plan and pause briefly there. Record again and listen only for the pauses.

If you got these wrong

Use the speaking rehearsal tool to record on your own device. For a teacher to listen and respond, see online one-to-one Bahasa Melayu tuition.

Common questions

How should I practise these prompts?

Say each answer aloud, not only in your head. Plan with keywords for under a minute, speak for a minute or so, and compare with the model. Record yourself if you can.

Should I memorise the model answers?

No. The models show structure. On a real task your prompt will differ, so practise the method and use your own ideas, examples and words.

Are these prompts from real assessments?

No. They were written for this site and do not predict any assessment. Your school sets the actual tasks, so confirm the format with your teacher.

If you practise these aloud and still freeze, one-to-one Bahasa Melayu lessons give you a teacher to speak to, who can respond to what you say and show you where the answer loses direction.
