Notes built on the wrong text cannot be rescued. The first job in KOMSAS revision is to confirm, with your school, which text your class studies. The note-making comes after that.
This page belongs to the SPM Bahasa Melayu guide. The matching lesson is checking the prescribed novel and school text before revision.
What does the student usually say?
“Kawan saya di sekolah lain belajar novel yang berbeza.” Or: “Saya ada buku rujukan, tetapi tidak pasti novel itu sama dengan yang kami baca di kelas.”
A confirmation routine
Run these steps before buying or copying any notes.
- Ask your BM teacher for the title and author of the text your class studies.
- Check the title against your textbook or the school’s announcement.
- Note the date you confirmed it, in case arrangements change.
- Only then start notes.
The routine takes about five minutes. A student who skips it risks several weeks of notes on a novel that is not the class text.
A note format that works for any novel
The scene below is invented for this page and does not come from any prescribed text. It shows the format only.
Scene (invented): Seorang budak bernama Aman menjumpai dompet di tepi jalan. Dia mencari pemiliknya sehingga petang dan menyerahkannya kepada seorang pakcik yang cemas.
| Column | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Event | What happened, in one line | Aman mencari pemilik dompet sehingga petang |
| Evidence | The detail from the text | Dia menyerahkannya kepada pakcik yang cemas |
| Quality or value | What the event shows | Jujur dan bertanggungjawab |
| Question it could answer | The kind of question the event fits | Nyatakan nilai yang ditunjukkan oleh watak |
One row per event keeps the notes short. When you later face a question, you scan the quality column and choose an event that fits. The format stays the same whichever novel you study.
What goes wrong?
- Copying a stranger’s notes. The notes may cover another text or another edition.
- Writing summaries instead of rows. A long summary gives no quick route to an answer.
- Inventing details. Notes must come from the text you read. If you cannot point to the page, leave the row out.
What can I do myself?
- Confirm the text with your teacher this week and write the title on your notebook.
- Build notes as you read, one row per event.
- Use your own words rather than copying pages from the book.
- Record each wrong answer in the mistake log and paper-error review and check whether the error was in the text or in the answer.
- Read building a character, event and evidence table for a fuller layout.
When might one-to-one tuition help?
Once you know the text, a teacher can help you turn your notes into answers, by asking which event fits a given question and why. This page cannot tell you which novel your school uses.
The one-hour trial class (from RM50) suits this well if you bring the title and your notes so far. Learn more at online one-to-one SPM Bahasa Melayu tuition.
