Standard Malay conversion practice with answers

You have read the four lessons, so now test whether your conversions hold.

These seven original questions ramp from single words to a full conversion. Try each one on paper before you open the answer.

If a question feels hard, revisit the lesson it tests, starting from the Bahasa Melayu standard hub.

Questions

Question 1. Give a standard equivalent for each: (a) segala (b) tatkala (c) patik (d) menyembah.

Answer

(a) semua or para, depending on the noun. (b) ketika or apabila. (c) saya, or name the speaker. (d) memberi hormat or memberi sembah.

This question tests vocabulary from converting classical phrasing.

Question 2. Convert: “Maka titah baginda, ‘Di manakah perahu itu?’”

Answer

Baginda bertanya di mana perahu itu.

“Maka” is dropped, “titah” becomes “bertanya”, and the direct question becomes reported speech.

Question 3. Convert: “Hatta berapa lamanya, maka ikan pun banyaklah dalam pukat itu.”

Answer

Setelah beberapa lama, banyak ikan terdapat dalam pukat itu.

“Hatta berapa lamanya” shows time passing. “Banyak” is in the extract, so it is allowed here.

Question 4. In “Adapun Pak Hitam itu menghadap Bendahara, lalu baginda bertitah,” who is “baginda”? Explain.

Answer

Not Bendahara. “Baginda” is a royal pronoun, so it points to a ruler. Bendahara is an official. The extract does not name the ruler, so in a conversion write “raja” or “baginda” without naming anyone.

This question tests pronouns and connectors.

Question 5. A student converts “Maka Sultan pun murka” as “Sultan marah dan memerintahkan hulubalang menangkapnya.” What must be corrected?

Answer

The part “memerintahkan hulubalang menangkapnya” is added information. The extract only says the Sultan was angry. The corrected version is: Sultan marah.

Question 6. Convert into standard Bahasa Melayu: “Maka sembah Laksamana, ‘Ya tuanku, patik telah sampai ke Melaka, tetapi Bendahara tiada ada di sana.’”

Answer

Laksamana memberitahu baginda bahawa dia telah sampai ke Melaka, tetapi Bendahara tiada di sana.

“Tetapi” stays because it shows contrast. “Tiada ada” is tidied to “tiada”. No detail was added.

Question 7. Smooth this draft without adding anything.

Draft: Nakhoda melihat ribut. Nakhoda memberitahu hulubalang. Hulubalang terkejut.

Extract: Maka nakhoda melihat ribut lalu memberitahu hulubalang. Maka hulubalang pun terkejut.

Answer

Nakhoda melihat ribut lalu memberitahu hulubalang, dan hulubalang terkejut.

The repeated “Nakhoda” is removed, “lalu” matches the extract, and “dan” joins the reaction. No cause is added. This tests sentence flow after conversion.

If you got some wrong

If you missed words, read converting classical phrasing while preserving meaning. If you added details, read avoiding added information.

Log each slip in the mistake log and paper-error review tool, and use the timed original practice session builder to repeat under time. A teacher in online one-to-one SPM Bahasa Melayu tuition can give you new extracts on the skill that slips most.

Common questions

How should I use this practice set?

Write your conversion on paper before opening the answer. Then compare it with the model by meaning, not by wording, since more than one version can be correct. Mark any detail you added and any meaning you lost.

Are these from real past papers?

No. All extracts are original and written in a classical style for practice. They do not come from a real hikayat or exam. Use your school's past papers for the official format and check the Lembaga Peperiksaan website.

What if my version is different from the model?

That is normal. Check that every fact in the extract is in your version, nothing extra is added, pronouns are clear and connectors keep the same relation. If all four hold, your version is acceptable.

If you only catch added details after reading the answer, a one-to-one BM teacher can give you new extracts and ask you for the source words until you catch them yourself.
