Plan SPM revision at boarding school

Your day is full of fixed hours, and your phone or laptop is limited.

At boarding school, plan by access: what you can do with only paper during prep hours, and what needs a device during permitted times. Sorting tasks this way stops you wasting scarce device time.

This guide belongs to the student study resources. Rules differ between schools, so follow your own hostel and school rules first.

How do I sort tasks by what I need?

Make a two-column list before each week.

Needs only paper and books Needs a device or internet
Past-style questions and marking An online lesson
Retrieval cards, error logs Interactive tools and simulations
Rewriting worked examples by hand Looking up a video explanation

Anything in the right column goes into the times your school allows, and everything else fills prep hours.

What does a good week look like?

Here is an original week for Izzat in Form 5. He has 90 minutes of prep each weeknight, and device access on Saturday afternoon and on outing weekends.

  • Sunday to Thursday prep: 40 minutes one subject with paper questions, 30 minutes of a second subject, 20 minutes error review.
  • Saturday afternoon: one online session or a tool, such as the motion-graph explorer, then note the results on paper.
  • Friday: light recall from cards and an early night.

He lists questions for Saturday during the week, so the device time is used for answers.

How do I handle a shared or limited device?

If you borrow a device, prepare everything in advance. Write down the exact tasks before you open anything, and close it when they are done. The online lesson readiness checklist covers charging, connection and a quiet spot, and studying with a shared phone or laptop has more detail.

What if a lesson clashes with hostel routines?

Ask first. A warden can tell you which windows are allowed, and a teacher can move around them if you say so in advance. Avoid agreeing a time you are unsure you can keep.

How do I use outing weekends?

Write a short list of what to do at home, often one lesson and one paper. Then rest. A weekend of only study leaves you tired for Monday prep.

The realistic revision planner can hold both the prep-hour and the weekend plans together.

When could online tuition fit?

If your school permits it and one subject needs focused help, a lesson in an approved window can work well. Try the one-hour trial class (from RM50) once your school has confirmed the time and place, and arrange later lessons directly with the teacher.

Common questions

Can I have online lessons at a boarding school?

It depends on your school's rules about devices and approved times. Ask your warden or school first. If lessons are allowed, agree a fixed time and place with the teacher and check your connection beforehand.

What can I study without a phone or laptop?

Past-style papers on paper, retrieval cards, worked examples copied by hand, mind maps and error logs. Save device tasks, such as watching a lesson or a simulation, for the times your school allows it.

How do I use outing weekends best?

Decide before you go which one or two device tasks you will do, such as an online lesson or a tool. Keep the rest of the weekend for rest, so you return to hostel routines fresh.

A one-to-one teacher can set the lesson time around your school's schedule and give you device-free tasks to do in prep hours between lessons.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
