SPM grades A+ to G explained

See what each letter on your result slip means and what counts as a pass.

SPM results are reported with letter grades from A+ at the top to G at the bottom. A pass, a credit and the certificate itself are three different things, and mixing them up causes most of the confusion on results day.

What are the SPM grades from A+ to G?

There are ten grades 1, each with a Malay label 2 and a grade point that runs from 0 for the best result to 9 for the weakest 3.

Grade Grade point Official Malay label
A+ 0 Cemerlang Tertinggi
A 1 Cemerlang Tinggi
A- 2 Cemerlang
B+ 3 Kepujian Tertinggi
B 4 Kepujian Tinggi
C+ 5 Kepujian Atas
C 6 Kepujian
D 7 Lulus Atas
E 8 Lulus
G 9 Gagal

A lower grade point is better, which surprises students who expect the opposite.

A candidate who did not sit a paper is marked T for Tidak Hadir (absent) and is not given a grade 2.

What does lulus mean?

Lulus means the subject is passed. Grades C and above are called kepujian, or credit, and grades D and E are passes below credit level 2. Grade G is a fail.

Course requirements can use the word credit, which means grade C or better, so a pass at D or E can still fall short of an entry rule.

Which subjects does the certificate depend on?

Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah are compulsory pass conditions for the SPM certificate, as the Education Minister confirmed in June 2023 4. A student can pass every other subject and still miss the certificate if one of these two is missing.

Because rules can be reviewed, treat this as the pattern and confirm the current year’s condition on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website or with your school. The certificate versus course entry comparison explains why the certificate and a course’s entry rules are separate checks.

Can I turn my marks into a grade?

No. The exact grading scale used each year has not been made public, so any table from a chat group is a guess 1. The page on understanding results without inventing grade boundaries shows how to compare practice marks fairly instead.

What should I do with this information?

  1. List the course you may want and find its stated grade requirements.
  2. Mark which of your subjects sit at pass level, credit level or above.
  3. Give extra weekly time to Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah first, because the certificate depends on them.
  4. Read the results day guide so you know how results arrive.

A teacher can then work on the specific skills behind a weak subject. See Bahasa Melayu tuition and Sejarah tuition, or return to the exam hub.

Common questions

What is the lowest passing grade in SPM?

Grade E is labelled Lulus, which means pass, and G is Gagal, which means fail. A credit, or kepujian, starts at grade C. Confirm the current wording on the Lembaga Peperiksaan site.

Which subjects must I pass to receive the SPM certificate?

Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah have been confirmed by the Education Minister as compulsory pass conditions. Check the current year's rule with Lembaga Peperiksaan or your school, because policy can change.

Does the same mark always give the same grade?

No. The exact grading scale used each year has not been made public, so a mark cannot be turned into a grade reliably. Use official results for grades and practice marks for skills.

Is a pass enough for university or college?

Not on its own. Each course sets its own entry requirements, and some ask for credits in named subjects. Read the course page before you decide where to put revision time.

If Bahasa Melayu or Sejarah is holding the certificate back, a one-hour trial class (from RM50) lets a teacher show what to fix before the next sitting.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
