The language of this website and the language of a lesson are two separate things. You can read about tuition in Chinese and know that lessons are in English or BM, the two teaching languages, depending on the subject.
What are the three languages in play?
| Language layer | Who chooses it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Page language | The reader, using the language switch | A parent reads the fee details in Chinese |
| Lesson language | English or BM, depending on the subject | Accounting is taught in BM, with English explanations where they help |
| Exam-answer language | The exam paper | Answers in Additional Mathematics are written as the paper asks |
Most confusion comes from mixing the second and third rows. A student can learn an idea in the language they understand best, then practise writing it in the language the paper uses.
Why does teaching language matter for learning?
A student who translates in their head uses working memory that should go to the subject. Here is an illustrative example. A Form 4 student who thinks in Chinese at home reads “the gradient of the tangent at x = 2” and loses ten seconds decoding the words before any calculus begins.
A teacher who explains the idea in plain English or BM, then attaches the exam term, lets the student meet the concept once and the vocabulary once. After a few lessons the vocabulary is familiar and the extra explanation fades.
Where does the language question matter most?
- Science and Mathematics taught in English at school. Students can know the concept but not the English label, and the teacher explains it in plain English or BM.
- Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah (History). The content is in BM, so lessons are in BM, with English explanations where they help and the answer wording staying in BM.
- Language subjects. Chinese, Tamil and Arabic students study that language itself, with explanations in English or BM.
The BM and English terminology bridge lists paired English and BM terms. Using English and BM subject terminology together shows a routine for learning them.
How do I tell you what the student needs?
Put three facts in your first WhatsApp message: the subject and form, whether English or BM suits the student better, and the language the school paper uses. For example: “Form 5 Physics, prefers BM explanations, paper in English.”
We use this when assigning an experienced teacher for that subject, and the one-hour trial class (from RM50) shows whether the style works. Parents who are more at home in another language can also read understanding online one-to-one lessons when you prefer another language.
What the language choice cannot change
Lesson language leaves the exam itself unchanged. A teacher can soften the path into a topic, but the student still practises answering in the exam’s language. See how online tuition works for the starting steps, from enquiry to trial to the schedule you agree with the teacher. Fees are paid monthly, based on the number of classes that month, and rescheduling a class needs at least 1 day’s notice.
