Maths and Add Maths for computing courses

Find out if Add Maths is worth the effort for the computing course you want.

For computing and IT pathways, Mathematics skills matter in two separate ways. One is formal, through entry requirements, and the other is practical, through how well maths supports later study.

What does the course formally ask for?

Only the institution can answer that. Some computing courses name Mathematics, some name Additional Mathematics and some name neither, and the wording can change between intakes.

Use the method in how to check SPM subject requirements for your next course, and record the exact requirement before making any choice about Add Maths.

What does maths give you in computing study?

Apart from entry rules, maths supports later study. Algebra helps with reading and writing formulas, functions teach how an input becomes an output, and logical steps in proofs resemble the steps of a program.

Additional Mathematics goes deeper on functions, graphs and rate of change. That can help a student who enjoys the abstract side of computing, although it is a benefit, not a rule.

How do the options compare?

Situation Sensible focus
Course names Mathematics only Secure Mathematics first, and treat Add Maths as optional
Course names Add Maths Give Add Maths steady weekly time early in Form 4
Course names neither Keep Mathematics strong and choose electives you can do well
Course not yet chosen Protect Mathematics, and keep Add Maths open if your school allows

An example with three students

The three cases are original. Hana wants a software course that names Mathematics. She puts her energy there and keeps Add Maths at a manageable level.

Kumar wants a course naming Add Maths. His weak algebra from Form 2 is the real risk, so he starts by repairing it, as in the algebra step repair trainer.

Zul has not chosen a course. He keeps both maths subjects open while taking time to read requirements, rather than dropping one early.

How should you plan revision?

  1. Check the requirement and write it down.
  2. Identify which maths skills are weak, using the prerequisite gap finder.
  3. Give the required subject weekly time, using the realistic revision planner.
  4. Re-check the requirement before applications open.

Common questions

Do all computing courses need Additional Mathematics?

Not necessarily. Requirements differ between courses and institutions, so check the current entry requirements of the exact course you want.

Is Mathematics more important than Add Maths for computing?

Mathematics is a common requirement across many pathways, so securing it is usually the first step. Whether Add Maths matters depends on the course, which you must confirm directly.

Does Add Maths help with programming?

It builds logic, functions and pattern handling that some students find transferable. That is a learning benefit, separate from any formal entry requirement.

If the maths side is the worry, a one-to-one trial in Mathematics or Additional Mathematics can show how quickly a teacher can rebuild the weak foundation.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
