How to prepare for the trial class

Thirty minutes of preparation helps the teacher find the real problem early.

A trial is most useful when the teacher sees the real problem early. Thirty minutes of preparation beforehand changes what the hour can achieve.

What is the goal of the trial?

The goal is for the teacher to find one specific gap, teach a fix and leave the student able to try a similar question alone. That is a good outcome for one hour.

It is not a revision of the whole subject, and it is not a mock exam. The one-hour trial class (from RM50) works best when it stays narrow.

What should you do in the 30 minutes before?

  1. Choose one subject and one chapter that hurts most.
  2. Find three questions the student got wrong in that chapter.
  3. Write one sentence for each: what the student thinks went wrong.
  4. Put the notes, textbook page and a pen on the desk.
  5. Run the ten-minute setup test for device, sound and camera.

What does a good brief look like?

The example is original. Here is a short brief for a Form 5 Physics trial.

Subject: Physics, Form 5. Chapter: electricity. Problem: I can calculate current with V = IR but I lose marks when there are two resistors. In the last test I got the series circuit right but the parallel one wrong. I think I am using the wrong total resistance.

This gives the teacher a starting point, a pattern and a hypothesis in five lines. The trial lesson agenda builder helps the student write one.

What should you leave out?

Skip a long list of every topic that feels shaky. The teacher will find other weak points as the lesson goes on, and a long list spreads the hour too thinly.

Also avoid memorising answers. A student who performs well in the first five minutes hides the very thing the lesson is for.

How do parents fit in?

After the trial, ask the student to explain one thing they learned, in their own words.

The parent and student discussion planner gives questions for that conversation. If the student is nervous about asking basic questions, read being afraid to ask basic questions in class together.

What happens after the trial?

Use the after-trial reflection and discussion checklist the same day, and decide with the guide on what to do after a trial lesson. Back to decisions.

Common questions

What should the student bring to the trial?

Two or three recent wrongly answered questions with the student's working, the textbook or notes for the chapter, and a pen and paper. Working shows the teacher where the thinking goes wrong.

Should the student prepare answers beforehand?

No. The teacher learns most from watching the student attempt a question cold. Bring the questions, not polished answers.

What if the student is shy?

Tell the teacher in advance. A quiet student often speaks more once they see the teacher is interested in their thinking, and the teacher can plan for that.

A well-prepared trial lets the teacher start on the real gap in the first ten minutes. Share the prepared brief when you enquire so the right teacher is assigned.
